Zelenskyy

I’m going to admit that Donald Trump’s treatment of Volodymyr Zelenskyy today made me angry.

It seems apparent that Zelenskyy was intended to simply take whatever Trump was offering – which would have essentially been to sell out all Ukraine’s minerals – and be thankful for the opportunity.

Or, maybe, it was intended that there would never be a deal, and that Trump invited Zelenskyy to the White House simply to ambush him, insult him to his face, and sabotage any chance of an agreement.

If feels like Trump got a stern talking-to from Vladimir Putin some time over the last 24 hours. Trump wouldn’t come up with a phrase like “you’re playing with World War Three” on his own – someone would have put it in his ear.

Can Ukraine be successful without U.S. aid? Maybe – after all, the majority of aid thus far has come from Europe and other countries, including Canada. But it’s reaching a point where it is running out of everything.

I am not a hawk. But it’s hard to see any peaceful way out of this.

If Russia is successful in its effort to earn territory by force, then the rules that have preserved the world order (such as it is) since 1945 are off. Countries may invade other countries. China and the United States and maybe some other countries themselves may be tempted to try the same thing.

It’s hard to imagine Trump resisting the temptation when Putin has already been successful with the same gambit.

The only thing that rescues the situation now – the only thing – is a widespread condemnation of Trump’s performance today, not just in Europe and in Canada, but within the United States itself.

The Russian people have been unable to stand up to a warmonger. It’s hard to imagine the American people being any better.
